Pontifical Basilica of Santa Croce

Free entry ★ Featured
In the heart of the historic centre, the Pontifical Basilica of Santa Croce is one of Torre del Greco’s most important landmarks. Its story is closely connected to the power of Mount Vesuvius and the resilience of the local community.

The 1794 eruption destroyed the earlier church and covered part of the town with lava. Its reconstruction was supported by the local community and by Blessed Vincenzo Romano, parish priest of Santa Croce and a key figure in the town’s history.

Today, the basilica is a must-see stop for visitors to Torre del Greco. Take time to admire its façade, step inside the church and explore the historic streets around it. On selected occasions and guided visits, you may also discover spaces and evidence connected with the earlier town buried by lava.
